Summer Fields Oxford

A proper farewell for the class of 2020

Four years in the making, but worth every second!

After our final year was cut short by the pandemic in 2020, the Summer Fields Class of 2020 finally got the long-awaited farewell we all deserved—and what a day it was! Last Sunday, we returned to the school for a reunion that brought back fond memories, rekindled old friendships, and gave us that sense of closure we missed back then. It was a day where nostalgia met laughter, and even a little bit of football rivalry.

The day began with a beautiful chapel service, where the familiar sound of hymns echoed through the hallways once again. Standing there, surrounded by familiar faces and voices, was a poignant reminder of how far we’ve come since our time at Summer Fields, and how much we had shared together. The service was heartfelt and made it clear that the school’s spirit, much like our bond, was still very much alive.

Post-service, we were treated to an absolutely delicious lunch up in the Salata Pavilion—a feast that featured an SF Classic: chicken katsu curry. Over the meal, we had the chance to catch up with old friends and our former teachers, sharing stories of what we’ve been up to since we left. The Pavilion was decked out with a fantastic photo wall, filled with snapshots of us from back in the day, capturing everything from classroom antics to those first nervous days at the school. It was a trip down memory lane, a reminder of the innocence, mischief, and camaraderie that defined our time there. There was even a film showing a performance from the musical we had staged in our very first year. There was a mixture of laughter and embarrassment —clearly future Broadway stars in the making!

With a renewed sense of nostalgia, many of us decided to take a walk around the school grounds. Exploring the old haunts—the classrooms, the sports fields, the common rooms—it was like stepping back in time. Every corner seemed to hold a memory, a flash of something we hadn’t thought of in years. We could practically hear our younger selves running down the corridors again.

Of course, no Summer Fields reunion would be complete without a football match! This time, the Etonians and Harrovians joined forces to take on “the rest of the world” in a thrilling, nail-biting game. There were moments of brilliance, a few slips (we’re a bit out of practice!), and plenty of goals to keep the excitement high. The cheers and groans from the sidelines made it all the more enjoyable. But the day wasn’t over yet—despite being worn out from our first match, we took on the ferocious team from Black Hole FC in what can only be described as a fierce, high-energy showdown. The legs may have been aching, but the competitive spirit was as alive as ever!

After the games, we gathered for tea and the final presentations, which marked the official close of the day. There were smiles all around as we reflected on the day’s events and said our goodbyes. This time, though, it wasn’t rushed or unexpected. It felt right—like we had finally gotten the closure we missed in 2020.

A massive thank you to RBL for organising the day with such care and thoughtfulness. It’s a day that will stay with us forever, a fitting end to a chapter that had been left open far too long.
